Metsä Group, a provider of tissue and cooking papers, board, pulp and wood products, is deploying RFID to better manage its pulp supply chain and order efficiency. The company hopes that adopting RFID will revolutionize the pulp industry as other suppliers deploy the technology.
The development is seen as a major advancement in the pulp and paper industry, similar to the current movement to get apparel suppliers to tag items at the source. RFID will be introduced at all Metsä Group’s pulp mills and most loading ports this spring. Real time tracking of pulp with RFID makes the entire supply chain more effective by automating distribution processes.
“The RFID system we have developed for pulp has been open to [everyone] in the industry right from the start,” says Ari Harmaala, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Metsä Fibre, based in Finland.
