Industry experts predict that the car industry will change more in the next decade than it has in the last 50 years due to the rise in connectivity and mobile technologies like RFID and NFC.
Ultimately, vehicles will be transformed into super computers on wheels, collecting huge amounts of data to enable safer and more efficient driving practices.
According to a recent blog post by NXP, drivers will be able to book rental cars or access services like ZipCar on their smart phone, and then use NFC technology to access the vehicle.
NFC will also be used to personalize car settings. For example, your favorite radio stations, preferred temperatures and seat positions will all be stored on a mobile device and adjust instantly when the device interacts with a sensor pad on the car.
In Germany, smart licenses have been introduced and can be used to access Car2Go vehicles.
