The largest BMW dealer in Germany has deployed RFID to track cars that arrive at the facility for service. Three to four hundred cars pass through the Munich facility each day, which are serviced by 130 mechanics.
With so many cars moving through the facility, the dealership was looking for an easier way to track vehicles as they are serviced. Systems integrator Dimension Data installed RFID readers from Zebra at 70 locations throughout the dealership.
Upon arriving at the dealership, each car is given an RFID-enabled hang tag, which is hung from the car’s rearview mirror. Customers in the waiting room are able to track their vehicle as it moves through the facility for service.
“We have put the new location system to productive use, and have seen very positive results in the planning, implementation and test phases,” says Wolfgang Bertsch, chief financial officer at BMW Munich.
