As more buzz builds around the Internet of Things, predictions about the number of connected devices seem to grow greater. Every research house has their own opinion of just how big the IoT market is, as well as their own definition for IoT.
According to ABI Research, there were 12.7 billion wirelessly connected devices in the world at the end of 2013, representing 70 percent growth from the end of 2010. By the end of 2020, this installed base is expected to reach 36.5 billion, which would be nearly three times more than in 2013 and five times more than back in 2010.
Aside from predicting the size of the market, ABI is also going to great lengths to clear up some of the uncertainty that looms over the terminology. This white paper defines Machine-to-Machine, the Internet of Things, the Internet of Humans and the Internet of Everything.
