SCA, a global provider of sustainable personal care, tissue and forest products, has deployed RFID to track paper reels at its factory in Le Theil, France. The entire supply chain has been automated to just five steps with the help of RFID.
The company utilized a WMS system from SAP and RFID infrastructure was provided by Vilant. The system is based on UHF Gen2 RFID tags, which are integrated into reusable cardboard cores of tambour reels.
The product and item codes are written into the RFID tag of the core at the paper machine. Warehouse movements are tracked with RFID enabled forklifts that both identify the tambour reel and the storage location from the floor tags. The conversion machines and cut points with RFID readers allocate both the consumption to certain production runs and track the consumption of a reel. All transactions are integrated into SCA’s MES and SAP WMS.
Every year, the Le Theil plant processes over 40,000 paper reels. RFID has automated more than 200,000 manual bar code or other transactions, leading to elimination of errors, improved material availability and fully automated production traceability.
