Intersport rolls out RFID; will gain ROI in less than 12 months

INTERSPORT Jan Bols, a sporting goods retailer located in the Netherlands, has deployed an RFID solution to provide quick and accurate inventory counts for all 10,000 items carried at the retail location. The solution will also opimize logistics and reduce out-of-stocks.

The plug-and-play solution can be deployed in one day and will provide INTERSPORT with a return on investment in less than 12 months. An additional 10 stores plan to roll out the solution this year. For now, RFID tags will be attached to goods in the store’s back room.

RFID in retail apparel

INTERSPORT Jan Bols is tagging all 10,000 items it carries to improve inventory accuracy and customer service.

RFID allows the retailer to complete inventory in 20 minutes by scanning shelves and racks from a distance. INTERSPORT JB will now conduct a complete inventory count on a weekly basis. All items in the store remain untouched and there is no need to waste time on pre-count or post-count preparations.

Reports are automatically generated and uploaded to the chain’s existing inventory management system, enabling the store manager to precisely order items from the INTERSPORT warehouse and various suppliers.

The solution was provided by Cross Point, a leader in retail loss prevention systems, and RFKeeper, a global provider of plug-and-play RFID solutions for fashion retailers.

“With our new RFKeeper solution supported by Cross Point, we are able to quickly count the store’s inventory every Monday morning,” says Alexander Bols, general manager of INTERSPORT Jan Bols. “It gives me great confidence that we are ordering the right products and that our inventory records are very accurate and up to date. Our workers like the solution and instantly adopted it since it is intuitive, and did not require changes in our daily working procedures.”

In addition, INTERSPORT JB deployed RFKeeper’s Smart POS Detachers to shorten checkout lines at the point of sales. Detachers quickly remove a security tag, and customer checkout time is reduced by up to 50 percent by eliminating barcode scanning. The result is shorter lines, accurate price charging and improved shopping experience.

“For years Cross Point has provided leading EAS security and visitor counting solutions to retailers such as INTERSPORT,” says Andre de Haas, managing director at Cross Point. “We are pleased to deliver the next big thing in retail – automated inventory counts and item-level stock management based on RFID.”

Amir Ben-Assa, vice president of marketing and business development at RFKeeper, says that the quick deployment at INTERSPORT JB demonstrates the effectiveness of plug-and-play solutions.

“We believe RFID solutions should be implemented immediately with no integration or costly investment in IT infrastructure,” he says. “INTERSPORT deployed our solution in less than a day and started to gain the RFID solution benefits from day one.”
