Porsche and Renault roll out RFID

European car makers like Volkswagen, Renault and Porsche are increasingly turning to RFID to track work-in-progress and the entire car supply chain. Porsche is going a step further by deploying RFID to track parts that are built into specific vehicles.

According to RFID hardware provider Nordic ID, Porsche is piloting RFID for a project called the “Gläserner Prototype,” where several parts of the prototype Porsche Macan are being tagged with transponders from Confidex. The Macan is a crossover SUV due to be released in 2013.

MotorAuthority has published these sneak preview pictures of the Porsche Macan. Many parts in the SUV are tagged with RFID.

By doing so, Porsche has a complete overview of which parts are built in a specific car. The luxury automaker can see, for example, when a part is changed or if it is missing. Nordic ID’S mobile devices allow them to check parts while on the road, such as while conducting test drives.

Nordic ID handhelds are also used by some suppliers to write the tags when the parts are sent to Porsche.

Meanwhile, French automotive manufacturer Renault is rolling out RFID in its industrial processes after a pilot phase produced successful results. Frequentiel, a strong player in the RFID market in France, has been tapped by Renault as the system integrator in charge of developing the software and deploying the solution. Nordic ID has been chosen as a hardware provider.

In a use case very similar to Volkswagen, Renault will rely on RFID to control the vehicles among the manufacturing chains. As reported by RFID 24-7 earlier this year, Volkswagen recently rolled out RFID sensor technology from Identec Solutions that allows the company to better track autos during the production process. The innovative logistics solution increases efficiency through the real-time locating of vehicles during the end-to-end production process at the VW production complex. RFID tracks 1,000 vehicles a day as they roll off the production line, and will help the facility ramp up to produce 400,000 vehicles annually.
