RFID tracks 1,000 vehicles a day at VW plant in Slovakia

Red one. Green one. White one. The trendy punch buggy game is still a hit when people spot a VW Beetle on the road. But keeping track of the cars just got much easier at the Volkswagen plant in Bratislava, the largest city in Slovakia.

The automaker recently rolled out RFID sensor technology from Identec Solutions that allows the company to better track autos during the production process. The innovative logistics solution increases efficiency through the real-time locating of vehicles during the end-to-end production process at the VW production complex. RFID tracks 1,000 vehicles a day as they roll off the production line, and will help the facility ramp up to produce 400,000 vehicles annually.

The SensorSMART platform allows vehicles to move more efficiently through final production stages to completion and enables more accurate deployment of equipment and personnel, ultimately improving resource coordination during Volkswagen’s production process.

The long communication range offered by the system is crucial given that the expansive facility covers almost one square mile.  Already deployed, the solution has been proven to substantially cut time and costs over the previous bar code system that required manual scanning at very close distances.

“The advantages of Identec Solution’s tracking system in Bratislava are obvious,” said Jens Wieland, director of process and technology management at Volkswagen Slovakia. “The solution allows better control of the finishing area in our automotive manufacturing process, most importantly by eliminating unnecessary searches for vehicles. Also, we can monitor the utilization zone, which enables us to control the deployment of personnel and resources efficiently, so we can increase vehicle throughput in the final production period.”

Autos at the VW production plant in Slovakia are now tracked with RFID technology.

Each vehicle is outfitted with a location sensor equipped with a unique identification that broadcasts positioning data that can be read with a manual, hand-held reader unit or a remotely controlled van equipped with a reading station. The information on each vehicle’s whereabouts is then collected in a central information system, where it is combined with manufacturing and quality data to provide intelligent planning and coordination of all the last production steps required to get the vehicles ready for release from the plant.
