Sustainable Management Systems has completed a pilot with the Orangeburg, S.C. Department of Public Utilities to deploy RFID across a network of transmission and distribution poles.
The utility was able to reduce overall inspection and maintenance time by a minimum of 45 percent through SMS’ PIMS workflow process application.
By affixing RFID tags to utility poles in their service territory, the Orangeburg DPU was able to inspect, maintain and dispose of utility poles within their network more efficiently by capturing pole-specific information, including a complete inspection record of poles and their related assets.
In addition, RFID allowed the utility to speed up the process of reporting and recovering revenues related to third party or joint use agreements, such as with cable providers, and to quickly and accurately capture and disseminate pole “event” data related to storms and other natural disasters.

The RFID system provides a full integration between inspection and field maintenance, including the use of real-time maintenance alerts to expedite response times and ensure the right materials are delivered to the right job. It also allows for improved management oversight of inspectors stated vs. actual productivity, and for cradle-to-cradle recording of vendor-provided poles for the purpose of meeting existing and/or pending regulatory requirements.
The PIMS pole inspection system utilizes RFID to accurately track each pole’s unique lifecycle from the manufacturing birth date through decommissioning. PIMS integrates a multitude of customizable technology solutions to fit a customer’s specific needs, ultilmately creating a pole inspection process that is more accurate while delivering significant labor cost savings through improved workflow processes.
Independent field research reveals PIMS can expedite pole inspection and workflow processes by as much as 70 percent compared to traditional processes employed by the utility industry.
