Macy’s CAO: whoever uses RFID best will win

Macy's CAO Tom Cole

RFID adoption remains strong, but it will take a unified effort through the global supply chain to push the technology to the point where it is ubiquitous among retailers and throughout the entire supply chain.

That was one of the primary messages during a panel discussion on the use of RFID in retail on the opening day of the NRF Big Show in New York City. The panel included Macy’s Chief Administrative Officer Tom Cole, who said that it is only a matter of time before RFID tags are on every item and become as common as bar codes.

“We know our competitors are involved with RFID and they all have different approaches, but at the end of the day we’ll all meet in the middle and ultimately I think almost all products will have an RFID tag,” Cole told a packed crowd at a Sunday morning session.

“What’s important is that we move this forward as an industry. RFID will be a competitive advantage in the beginning, but ultimately, like bar codes, it just depends on who uses it better. Whoever puts it to the best use will win.”
