Retailer Dazzle rolls out item level apparel tagging in China

The global deployment of apparel tagging continues. The latest news comes from China, where international fashion brand Dazzle is rolling out RFID throughout its retail chain. The company has been deploying RFID for six months, first for its fall apparel collection, and now its line of winter clothing.

Initially, Dazzle hopes to improve supply chain and sales channel management. During the next rollout phase, the retailer will unveil interactive smart displays that show customer purchases, provide product information and offer customers matching accessories. At its warehouses, the company will use trolleys with RFID readers to confirm that the right apparel has been selected.

The apparel lines are utilizing carry hang tags with UPM ShortDipole™ and UPM Belt™ RFID inlays. The company is also working with integrator Shanghai BizGrid Information Technology.

Dazzle has three targets for its RFID project. First, the company seeks to improve logistical efficiency as well as shipping and receiving operations. With RFID, every box is read and verified at receipt, improving storage accuracy and efficiency.

Like many other retailers deploying the technology, Dazzle also hopes to improve store inventory accuracy. Garments with RFID hang tags are read on arrival at retail shops, enabling smart storage allocation and improved on-shelf availability. Using handheld RFID readers, store personnel are able to check inventory levels and replenish sold-out items.

Ultimately, Dazzle hopes to enable item-level tracking from storage to the point-of-sale, as well as verify garment authenticity. Utilizing RFID readers and antennas at checkout, multiple garments can be scanned simultaneously for faster customer checkout. Since RFID hang tags have EAS functionality, they are also used for anti-theft purposes.

“With RFID technology we aim to enhance both our internal operations as well as the customer experience,” Shi Jie, IT Manager for Dazzle, said in a release. “Hang tags with UPM RFID inlays play an essential role in the process, providing quality and reliability. We have run the project for six months now, and can already see the benefits of the technology. Dazzle will extend the scope of the RFID implementation in the near future.”
